after today, i'm further convinced that evil exists, so that a greater good can be generated out of it. =) the logical problem of evil is never a problem haha.
crawled out of bed late. it was raining. trudged to buangkok mrt. sat in train. switched on laptop, to listen to mraz sing "cause you and i both loved..." it's quite rare for me to switch on my lappy in the train cause i wont get seats, or i'll read, or i'll sleep (ever since i stopped myself from bringing my psp out haha). since laptop alr on, might as well, opened the EN2111 folder.
double-clicked this file called "Format for the Final Exam"
drop jaw. "open book"
great.
and so the first pple i thought of messaging were damien and zou, fellow brit-lit-ers, and liz, cause i somehow rmb-ed her telling me that she did this once too haha. and mel my cosmo twin, who was telling me about how cross-country was cancelled because of the rain. and sam, after her visit to the clinic. and so these fantastic people who happened to be messaging me, i told them bout this la.
met rachel then grace and chan. SW hons class is fantastic man! loved that stupid film! if it's on fb or youtube i'll 5-star it for sure haha. cheered me up quite a bit la. then xiong with a fren, and jonas! how rare. never see you in sch leh past few days. oh you were? studying where? oh SOC ah. oookay. (yeah zou that conver was reproduced for you HAHA. tskkk.)
damien joash poon, you're the man, man. thanks for pulling strings and getting me the books and giving me advice! not just talking about work, but everything in general, and encouragement on our faith in particular.
and all you fantastic people who has prayed/are praying/going to pray for me: thank you! and of course, thank You Father, for listening to the prayers of all these silly people who're willing to pray for me. =)
and so studied a lil with joanna and rachel and zou and eeli after the paper. watched youtube clips and had "nobody" stuck in my head. heh.
dinner in church. took a break from normal choir practise, watched a super nice film! it's french "les choristes" (pronounced lay ko-hist, according to the twins haha. french. hmmm. haha.) well the plot was so-so, and there were quite a lot of boo-boos in the movie, like the doorbell rings, the man gets up and opens the door, to see the other guy arriving from a distance? then who, or what, rang the bell? LOL. but yeah sam was right, i love the songs. awww. =)
at first when i realised there wasnt regular practise and its movie session instead, i really wanted to go back downstairs and start to read my notes. but yeah i needed the break la. and after the movie, to be reminded that it takes discipline to make a good choir, on the part of each and every individual member. and also, to just recapture that sense of wonder and beauty of classical music la, especially the joy of singing! and if just singing for singing's sake can be such an enjoyable thing, more so the joy we get when we're praising our Lord right. =)
AND there was this one scene, when all the boys were going thru their auditions to see which part they'll sing in, there was this poor boy that was so horribly tone-deaf, and jiaming's reaction was to shout my name. HAHA. well everyone laughed of course. yuan, thanks for trying to defend me la haha. but hey it's really true what! i was, and is still, very much tone-deaf, and inept at singing. perhaps it's the same conclusion that i arrived at re: interpreting in ytd's post la. =)
well well. mug, mug. gaNbatte, people! (eeli hope your eyes are getting better btw. =))

humbling experience today as interpreter during prayer meeting. weiwu had an evening paper so it was once again my turn to interpret for rev lai. mind was quite blank, after slacking a whole day away at home and only reading a few pages of my poco coursepack on the train.
since last week i've been thinking of the term “淫妇” and how it should be translated. okay, "seductress". "temptress", what i've been using myself, seems to be a lil more obscure and not so accessible.
same thing today when "捧大脚" was used today, and the term just escaped my zoned-out mind that i keep using the phrase "curry flavour", altho i know it wasnt the best of terms. think 牧师 buay tahan me alr ahha so he pointed it out. tsk. marcus suggested "flatter" and yuan suggested "pander"; both words that i know la, i so wanted to be smacking my own forehead when i heard the words haha.
as important as improving my vocabulary is, i have a bigger lesson to learn from tonight, with the sharing that marcus has had with me after prayer meeting.
to be of "one spirit" with the speaker; indeed, to become the 'second speaker'
being an interpreter as not merely being the translator, translating word for word, but as trasmitting the whole message, with its tone and gravity and power, as if it's from the first speaker.
the reminder that you might be the only voice that someone in the audience can understand. (reminds me of rev tong's preaching last sunday haha)
yup. i know i've tried to be bringing across tone, and guessing what the speaker's general thread is going and thus going a lil ahead, pre-empting what is to come. the good thing is that as i learn and grow, trusting in God in the process, i know i will improve. and if this is one area that i'm not gifted with the priviledge of serving God in, God will always open another door for me.
and yeah also the reminder that i might be speaking to people who can understand ONLY english. it's something that in my church it's easy to forget, being filled with chinese and hardly any one from other races, and maybe also being bilingual myself. but is this a chicken-or-egg question? is it because there isn't any non-chinese people around and thus i can take the ministry of interpretation easily? or is it because the ministry of interpretation is not taken seriously enough and thus we see the notable absence of non-chinese in my church? this is beyond my level to answer lah haha.
another perspective of looking at the interactions between two different languages then! maybe i can work this into poco.... haha.
but beyond all that. i just pray that God is pleased with whatever i'm doing, even though i may still suck at it. and i'm thankful that He's still willing to use me in such a way, in spite of me being lousy at it. oh. or maybe precisely because i'm lousy at it ahha! now that's a thought to keep. aye, for His glory alone. =)

And what a beautiful mess this is It's like picking up trash in dresses
Well it kind of hurts when the kind of words you write Kind of turn themselves into knives And don't mind my nerve you could call it fiction But I like being submerged in your contradictions dear 'Cause here we are, here we are
Although you are biased I love your advice Your comebacks they're quick And probably have to do with your insecurities There's no shame in being crazy, Depending on how you take these Words, I'm paraphrasing, this relationship we're staging
And what a beautiful mess this is It's like picking up trash in dresses

and through timeless words and priceless pictures we'll fly like birds not of this earth and tides they turn and hearts disfigure but that's no concern when we're wounded together and we tore our dresses and stained our shirts but it's nice today Oh, the wait was so worth it.

Was it you who spoke the words that things would happen but not to me? All things are gonna happen naturally Oh, taking your advice and I'm looking on the bright side And balancing the whole thing.
Oh, but at often times those words get tangled up in a lines And the bright light turns to night Oh, until the dawn it brings Another day to sing about the magic that was you and me
Cause you and I both loved What you and I spoke of And others just read of Others only read of, of the love Of the love that I loved
See I'm all about them words Over numbers, unencumbered numbered words; Hundreds of pages, pages, pages for words. More words than I had ever heard, and I feel so alive.
Cause you and I both loved What you and I spoke of And others just read of And if you could see me now Oh, love love You and I, You and I Not so little you and I anymore
And with this silence brings a moral story More importantly evolving is the glory of a boy
Cause you and I both loved What you and I spoke of (of, of) And others just read of And if you could see me now Well, then I'm almost finally out of I'm finally out of Finally deedeedeedeedeedee Well I'm almost finally, finally Well I am free Oh, I'm free
And it's okay if you had to go away Oh, just remember that telephones Well, they work out of both ways But if I never ever hear them ring If nothing else I'll think the bells inside Have finally found you someone else and that's okay Cause I'll remember everything you sang
Cause you and I both loved What you and I spoke of (of,) And others just read of and if you could see me now Well, then I'm almost finally out of I'm finally out of Finally deedeedeedeedeede Well I'm almost finally, finally Out of words

This is Adrian Tan's speech at the convocation of students at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (NTU). Adrian Tan is a litigation partner at Drew & Napier LLC. LIFE AND HOW TO SURVIVE IT I must say thank you to the faculty and staff of the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information for inviting me to give your convocation address. It's a wonderful honour and a privilege for me to speak here for ten minutes without fear of contradiction, defamation or retaliation. I say this as a Singaporean and more so as a husband. My wife is a wonderful person and perfect in every way except one. She is the editor of a magazine. She corrects people for a living. She has honed her expert skills over a quarter of a century, mostly by practising at home during conversations between her and me. On the other hand, I am a litigator. Essentially, I spend my day telling people how wrong they are. I make my living being disagreeable. Nevertheless, there is perfect harmony in our matrimonial home. That is because when an editor and a litigator have an argument, the one who triumphs is always the wife. And so I want to start by giving one piece of advice to the men: when you've already won her heart, you don't need to win every argument. Marriage is considered one milestone of life. Some of you may already be married. Some of you may never be married. Some of you will be married. Some of you will enjoy the experience so much, you will be married many, many times. Good for you. The next big milestone in your life is today: your graduation. The end of education. You're done learning. You've probably been told the big lie that "Learning is a lifelong process" and that therefore you will continue studying and taking masters' degrees and doctorates and professorships and so on. You know the sort of people who tell you that? Teachers. Don't you think there is some measure of conflict of interest? They are in the business of learning, after all. Where would they be without you? They need you to be repeat customers. The good news is that they're wrong. The bad news is that you don't need further education because your entire life is over. It is gone. That may come as a shock to some of you. You're in your teens or early twenties. People may tell you that you will live to be 70, 80, 90 years old. That is your life expectancy. I love that term: life expectancy. We all understand the term to mean the average life span of a group of people. But I'm here to talk about a bigger idea, which is what you expect from your life. You may be very happy to know that Singapore is currently ranked as the country with the third highest life expectancy. We are behind Andorra and Japan, and tied with San Marino. It seems quite clear why people in those countries, and ours, live so long. We share one thing in common: our football teams are all hopeless. There's very little danger of any of our citizens having their pulses raised by watching us play in the World Cup. Spectators are more likely to be lulled into a gentle and restful nap. Singaporeans have a life expectancy of 81.8 years. Singapore men live to an average of 79.21 years, while Singapore women live more than five years longer, probably to take into account the additional time they need to spend in the bathroom. So here you are, in your twenties, thinking that you'll have another 40 years to go. Four decades in which to live long and prosper. Bad news. Read the papers. There are people dropping dead when they're 50, 40, 30 years old. Or quite possibly just after finishing their convocation. They would be very disappointed that they didn't meet their life expectancy. I'm here to tell you this. Forget about your life expectancy. After all, it's calculated based on an average. And you never, ever want to expect being average. Revisit those expectations. You might be looking forward to working, falling in love, marrying, raising a family. You are told that, as graduates, you should expect to find a job paying so much, where your hours are so much, where your responsibilities are so much. That is what is expected of you. And if you live up to it, it will be an awful waste. If you expect that, you will be limiting yourself. You will be living your life according to boundaries set by average people. I have nothing against average people. But no one should aspire to be them. And you don't need years of education by the best minds in Singapore to prepare you to be average. What you should prepare for is mess. Life's a mess. You are not entitled to expect anything from it. Life is not fair. Everything does not balance out in the end. Life happens, and you have no control over it. Good and bad things happen to you day by day, hour by hour, moment by moment. Your degree is a poor armour against fate. Don't expect anything. Erase all life expectancies. Just live. Your life is over as of today. At this point in time, you have grown as tall as you will ever be, you are physically the fittest you will ever be in your entire life and you are probably looking the best that you will ever look. This is as good as it gets. It is all downhill from here. Or up. No one knows. What does this mean for you? It is good that your life is over. Since your life is over, you are free. Let me tell you the many wonderful things that you can do when you are free. The most important is this: do not work. Work is anything that you are compelled to do. By its very nature, it is undesirable. Work kills. The Japanese have a term "Karoshi", which means death from overwork. That's the most dramatic form of how work can kill. But it can also kill you in more subtle ways. If you work, then day by day, bit by bit, your soul is chipped away, disintegrating until there's nothing left. A rock has been ground into sand and dust. There's a common misconception that work is necessary. You will meet people working at miserable jobs. They tell you they are "making a living". No, they're not. They're dying, frittering away their fast-extinguishing lives doing things which are, at best, meaningless and, at worst, harmful. People will tell you that work ennobles you, that work lends you a certain dignity. Work makes you free. The slogan "Arbeit macht frei" was placed at the entrances to a number of Nazi concentration camps. Utter nonsense. Do not waste the vast majority of your life doing something you hate so that you can spend the small remainder sliver of your life in modest comfort. You may never reach that end anyway. Resist the temptation to get a job. Instead, play. Find something you enjoy doing. Do it. Over and over again. You will become good at it for two reasons: you like it, and you do it often. Soon, that will have value in itself. I like arguing, and I love language. So, I became a litigator. I enjoy it and I would do it for free. If I didn't do that, I would've been in some other type of work that still involved writing fiction - probably a sports journalist. So what should you do? You will find your own niche. I don't imagine you will need to look very hard. By this time in your life, you will have a very good idea of what you will want to do. In fact, I'll go further and say the ideal situation would be that you will not be able to stop yourself pursuing your passions. By this time you should know what your obsessions are. If you enjoy showing off your knowledge and feeling superior, you might become a teacher. Find that pursuit that will energise you, consume you, become an obsession. Each day, you must rise with a restless enthusiasm. If you don't, you are working. Most of you will end up in activities which involve communication. To those of you I have a second message: be wary of the truth. I'm not asking you to speak it, or write it, for there are times when it is dangerous or impossible to do those things. The truth has a great capacity to offend and injure, and you will find that the closer you are to someone, the more care you must take to disguise or even conceal the truth. Often, there is great virtue in being evasive, or equivocating. There is also great skill. Any child can blurt out the truth, without thought to the consequences. It takes great maturity to appreciate the value of silence. In order to be wary of the truth, you must first know it. That requires great frankness to yourself. Never fool the person in the mirror. I have told you that your life is over, that you should not work, and that you should avoid telling the truth. I now say this to you: be hated. It's not as easy as it sounds. Do you know anyone who hates you? Yet every great figure who has contributed to the human race has been hated, not just by one person, but often by a great many. That hatred is so strong it has caused those great figures to be shunned, abused, murdered and in one famous instance, nailed to a cross. One does not have to be evil to be hated. In fact, it's often the case that one is hated precisely because one is trying to do right by one's own convictions. It is far too easy to be liked, one merely has to be accommodating and hold no strong convictions. Then one will gravitate towards the centre and settle into the average. That cannot be your role. There are a great many bad people in the world, and if you are not offending them, you must be bad yourself. Popularity is a sure sign that you are doing something wrong. The other side of the coin is this: fall in love. I didn't say "be loved". That requires too much compromise. If one changes one's looks, personality and values, one can be loved by anyone. Rather, I exhort you to love another human being. It may seem odd for me to tell you this. You may expect it to happen naturally, without deliberation. That is false. Modern society is anti-love. We've taken a microscope to everyone to bring out their flaws and shortcomings. It far easier to find a reason not to love someone, than otherwise. Rejection requires only one reason. Love requires complete acceptance. It is hard work - the only kind of work that I find palatable. Loving someone has great benefits. There is admiration, learning, attraction and something which, for the want of a better word, we call happiness. In loving someone, we become inspired to better ourselves in every way. We learn the truth worthlessness of material things. We celebrate being human. Loving is good for the soul. Loving someone is therefore very important, and it is also important to choose the right person. Despite popular culture, love doesn't happen by chance, at first sight, across a crowded dance floor. It grows slowly, sinking roots first before branching and blossoming. It is not a silly weed, but a mighty tree that weathers every storm. You will find, that when you have someone to love, that the face is less important than the brain, and the body is less important than the heart. You will also find that it is no great tragedy if your love is not reciprocated. You are not doing it to be loved back. Its value is to inspire you. Finally, you will find that there is no half-measure when it comes to loving someone. You either don't, or you do with every cell in your body, completely and utterly, without reservation or apology. It consumes you, and you are reborn, all the better for it. Don't work. Avoid telling the truth. Be hated. Love someone. You're going to have a busy life. Thank goodness there's no life expectancy.
(thanks sam. =) emphasis mine.)

For the director of music. A psalm of David.
1 How long, O LORD ? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?
2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and every day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me?
3 Look on me and answer, O LORD my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death;
4 my enemy will say, "I have overcome him," and my foes will rejoice when I fall.
5 But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.

5. dinner+supper=dipper at home. =) reminds me of what i told sk's mom ytd haha.
prayer:
1. for ruiz. fruitful reading week in the sense that 1) get work done, 2) be good testimony to psych frens, to "be a channel of God's love and blessing to them :)" (Chua, 2009)

2. WBS tutorial in church. altho am late, learnt a lot. e-sword helps loads. covered a lil on 1 and 2 kings, life of samuel, saul, david, covenant theology. reminder from ky that i am indeed blessed with more education from my church than the average singaporean church.
3. IFG's potluck and bbq. felt bad that i didnt bring anything myself, least i could do was to help out a lil with carrying stuff and being the runner haha. thanks for friendships, memories, fellowships, chances to think thru and be confronted by issues, being able to serve together. esp to sk, joy, josef, well done with the sharing! thanks be to God. and unsung hero bx, the bbq man. =) now for ifg as a whole i guess. sk, for being the mini-boss that leads us in serving our biggest Boss, his love for all the students, his encouragement and affirmation for me, for being an example. limmy, for always trying to get me involved in the ministry, giving me the priviledge to co-work with her, and showing me how little gestures and gifts can show how much love. joy, grace, lai, tee, jo, eeli: being the pillars of IFG that has kept it going going going. shaffy, for being a good sport, asking good questions, a good sparring partner, having a serious attitude towards faith, but beyond all that, for being my friend. simon, for your friendliness, being approachable, being a part of mondayCG. everyone else who's been joining IFG: it's my loss that i've not had the chance to get to know you all better. thanks anyway for making tonight, and this whole ministry possible.
4. that i've spent all my time today in the presence of godly people, and thus good examples. sk's parents especially, am very encouraged by their actions and hospitality.

3. samantha's plans for india: peace and absence of political turmoil, ironing out of details.

5. service tml. waking up on time, being calm before Him, a worship that is pleasing to Him.

5 blessings to be counted off:
1. that people do read my blog. and do something about it. haha. i dont want this space to be self-centered or even sound egoistic or narcissistic... but it's me la. so thank you yen and eeli. =) yen, for your sms (showing me the double-edged-ness of this communicating avenue haha), and eeli, for letting me laugh at you last night so that i'll feel much better. awwww. =D
2. lester's bday! and the surprise that the exco threw. thanks for inviting us other pple along to be part of this as well! being able to know lester must count as one of the bigger blessings that i've experienced in school thus far la. thanks be to God. =)
3. the empty LT 10 that i found myself in from 1300 to 1355 today! when i was able to just blast music and sing to myself... first was the three phantom tunes that i usually sing, then progressed on to songs of praise... it really felt like worship at FTs la, the whole LT being filled with the song... and i was just very blessed to be able to have that time to sing praises to God, and to be strengthened myself in the process. the experience was sooooo good, i couldnt pull myself away to go collect my BS worksheets from ruiz haha.
4. BS today. reappearence after a 2 month long hiatus, and the thing that struck me's how much the number's grown. amazing. thank God. =) and how strong the fellowship has grown too. not to mention me learning a few lessons on how to use my e-sword more effectively and without compromising on classroom etiquette as well.
5. being online. almost everyone treats it like a vice, well it could jolly well be, but chatting on msn with mx, rachel, darren, samantha and eeli brought joy to me. and when grace forces me to be her slave labour in tagging all the pictures.... NO LAH hahhahaa. the pictures were indeed a powerful visual reminder of all the smiley faces and happy times that God has blessed me with in school la. indeed the fact that i could tag the faces and put a name to it deserves an acknowlegement that it is God who has brought such friends to me, made our friendships and fellowships possible, and using each and everyone of them to be a source of blessing to me. =) p/s: and talking to eeli's a very illuminating experience. i know that as usual i'm the one talking too much, but it helps me sort my thoughts out on certain issues, and better appreciate the diversity in the unity that we have as brother and sister in Christ Jesus. =)
5 prayer pointers:
1. for everyone's work and revision. health and motivation. (yeah mx it's alr here =))
2. for the birthday boy. health, strength, blessings. and since he asked for it, future life partner. =D
3. for eeli. that she won't feel hungry. no lah haha. not knowing what to pray for means that there's everything to be praying for. =) and yeah life partner for you too!
4. for darren. leg, discipline to study, "more hair on my head" (?!?!), wisdom and discernment in studies.
5. for tomorrow's plans. breakfast at darren's, Whole Bible Study tutorial, IFG bbq/potluck at sk's place. esp the last one, hope it goes well, for the glory of God. =)

a break from the usual listing down of blessings to be counted, although there will be, of course. putting my thoughts into words helps me in a number of ways: be forced to think them thru, then articulate them, then sometimes a new perspective is given when you see the thoughts on the screen in front of you rather than just floating around in your head.
my personal quest to not allow this exam season to become heartbreak season again continues. my journey on this quest is a hilly one, which sort of mirrors my spiritual walk with God the past fortnight or so: some days i have the blessed assurance in my heart that my God is with me, that whatever happens i will trust God with my whole heart and soul. other days (or nights), i dread and fret and worry and spend my time in excruciating agony and oppressive loneliness.
i tell God, of course. i know He listens, but me of lil faith fail to grasp that He might be leading me somewhere that i might not want to go, but that it is for my own good. sometimes i look at a dog struggling against a leash and i think that "hey that's me". sounds heretical haha i hope not!
i thank God for putting pple around me to listen. zou must top this list haha. joe, who's joking around most of the time, so when i tell him a lot of things he might think i'm joking, and yet amazingly he cheers me up so yeah haha. and mx's paying her penence for last sem very very well =P (joking la my dear haha.)
while on youtube listening to jedimindless (again yes i know haha) this very old and familiar song spoke to me yet again
Lord, I offer my life to you Everything I've been through Use it for your glory Lord I offer my days to you Lifting my praise to you As a pleasing sacrifice Lord I offer you my life
Things in the past, things yet unseen Wishes and dreams that are yet to come true All of my hopes, all of my plans My heart and my hands are lifted to you
What can we give That you have not given? And what do we have That is not already yours? All we possess Are these lives we're living That's what we give to you, Lord
in the past i would just think of this song as referring to the more tangible things, like time and money and energy, to be giving them in service to God. but today... it's much more than that. it's not just "my hands" that are lifted to Him, but "my heart", my "wishes and dreams", my "hopes" and "plans" as well. my faith is not just an outward action, but also an internal, emotional response to my God.
and with good friday just over, i am strengthened, when i rmb that Jesus my Lord has suffered not just physically on His way to the cross, but even more so, emotionally as well. the sinless dying in place of the sinner... i simply cant imagine that.
"He (Jesus) withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground." -Luke 22:41-44
indeed, Father, not my will, but Thine be done.
p/s: indeed my Lord has been faithful, that He has shown me friends that shares with me their concern and joy. every lil bit of support counts, and i thank all of you (lester, andrew, darren, sam, eeli) for being here for me tonight. B-cube, lester! haha =)

"Thus by means of conclusion, we see that the postcolonial intellectual himself is a statement, in addition to the statements that he would go on to articulate. He sees problems with existing meta-narratives and criticizes them, while recognizing that he has no credible alternative to offer and that the only thing he can do is question. He understands at the same time the usefulness of universalization and the pitfalls of generalization. The methods in which he uses to question may be either within or outside of the system, but always creative and forceful if he hopes to achieve a reaction. He as an exile needs to be able to communicate his unique vision of his people to his people, and to speak the truth with wisdom. He looks into his own heart and is honest with his own motivations, even as he recognizes that he is not a saint, working with solely altruistic values. Lastly, he is one who is not afraid to go against past traditions and age-old laws and doctrines, or present status quo, or even future expectations and predictions to arrive at, and articulate, his own ideas and values."
this is the conclusion of my poco essay... not very well done, but i'm just glad to have something to pass up. thanks to all of you who have been (figuratively, of course) spanking my ass over the course of the last dunno-how-many-days to get me to do my work... and for dean and rachel, the two people who knows Said too and actually register recognition when they see my text... haha. =D

God will make a way Where there seems to be no way He works in ways we cannot see He will make a way for me
He will be my guide Hold me closely to His side With love and strength for each new day He will make a way He will make a way

5 thanksgiving pointers:
1. mx's change of status last night. =D exciting stuff. but she only told me today so this belongs here haha.
2. that zou gave me a slogan tee! so random haha! and liz has the same tee too, she better hopes that we dont end up wearing it on the same day haha. but now i have another tee to wear if i ever go out with jane, knowing how much she loves slogan tees haha =D and of course the more important thing that zou gives me is of course his advice, presence, company, comfort. that's worth more than tees la. =D and the fact that it's my first threadless tee... awww. reminds me of the "but threadless tee still got thread what!" haha.
3. finishing my pol sci essay. and after talking to esther, thankful that my com didnt crash on me in the last min.
4. dinner with ruiz. for the time spent together and the conversations. =)
5. macs with zou after everything. the kind of things that transpire between us... i'm joking bout the part that you wont be my best man la haha! too dangerous to piss you off and risk you blackmailing me HAHA
5 prayer pointers: (this is when bx's comments come to mind. all that are here's things that i'm comfy bout sharing. things that arent here doesnt mean i'm not praying bout them still.)

1. my anntic grp! with all these talk about meet-ups before/during/after exams. and how we care and love each other in lil ways. like thinking of darren's immobility. or joce not really liking to kayak. and trying to fit everyone's schedules. yes, i feel lurved. thanks be to God. =)
2. service today. managed to reach just on time, present a hymn that was once again so blessed by the Holy Spirit (in that not a lot of people caught the fact that we hit all the wrong notes everywhere), and for the lessons learnt in sunday school. and the fact that i can serve in moving the partitions! even though it always means that i miss out on talking to people, i'll be forced to shout at the brothers to order them around, and that the drinks and cookies are always gone by the time i'm done, but i have faith that by doing all that i'm racking up brownie points in heaven, which is where it really counts. =)
3. for LTA(NS) liangzhen and lixin's baptism today. thank God for holding the weather, and for being encouraged by the testimonies of these two... lixin's was quite funny la, exposing meiyun and darius to a lil joking, but i really see the child-like faith that's in her, and reminds me again of the danger that i might find myself in if i go all-out for head-knowledge alone. and liangzhen... i witness his faith, his deep thinking, and also his interest in further biblical studies and maybe even higher-level apologetics? it'd be interesting to be able to catch up with him further on this =)
4. mugging with ruiz, david yam, and siew ying. that i managed to make progress on my pol sci essay (ruiz you're so right la i didnt touch it when i'm back home! =/) and that ruiz managed to study a lil for her understanding the univerese test and yam did some econs homework and siew ying did some chem. and for her coming to church as well! =) not to mention witnessing the murder of a lizard at ljs. hmmmm. heh.
5. after dinner, going to rev tong's with ruiz. learning pointers would probably deserve it's own blog post, but two main points would be first, i know a lil better how to respond to a charismatic's understanding of tongues vs. the reformed understanding, and secondly, a better appreciation of having been thru g-cube phase 1. =)
and just to end off with a quote that refers to things i've heard: The law sends us to the gospel, that we may be justified, and the gospel sends us to the law again to enquire what is our duty, being justified.

5 blessings today:
1. being able to catch brit lit lecture on time. at least getting a feel of what In The Castle of My Skin is about, so that i'm not totally clueless bout it.
2. and well altho the grade for my essay's disappointing, as i thought i'd do better than a B-, i'm thankful that dr. yeoh has made many constructive remarks to point out my weaknesses (shao went 'aiyoh' at the amount of red ink that was all over my paper la). and hopefully i'll be able to do better in my next one. altho i havent even started thinking bout it yet =/
3. finally starting on my pol sci essay this late afternoon in church. think limmy told me ytd or the day before to "just start writing lah!" and i guess i'm just taking the plunge now, giving flesh to the skeleton that i've alr come up with, then decorating it up later when i'm done, if i have time. hope it all goes well.
4. coffee+dinner in church. =) not to mention a great internet connection so i could end up watching all the champion's league match highlights. =D
5. choir practise. psyched up for tml! =)

1. health for everyone appearing on stage tml.
2. for people around me that i'm going to invite: my mother, and my soccer kakis. that their hearts will be open, and willing to come and hear.

this is going to be one long post haha. tis' an attempt to put down in words what my senior pastor shared with us ytd during prayer meeting. in typical un-Coetzee-ian fashion i ask that any points that you should question or disagree with should be directed at me and not anbody else, i take full responsibility on what shows up on my blog haha.
i was a lil surprised myself when i looked at the prayer items and i see that this coming sunday is referred to as "Resurrection Sunday" by my church. isn't it easter? what's wrong with using that name? and so the whole story was explained later.
easter, whether as a festive day or a day marked out on calenders, has actually been around for around 2000 years BEFORE Jesus walked the earth. hmmm. it first shows up in the european lunar calender, which is itself inherited from babylonian culture. its exact day on the lunar calender would be the first sunday of the full moon of the summer (what a mouthful haha), as the next day would be thought as the best day for farmers to actually sow their seeds. and so, we see that the origins of this day of festive is in itself not exactly biblical, isn't it.
and now let us look at the word "easter" itself and try to trace its origins. it actually comes from the word "ishtar", the name of a babylonian goddess. and when the romans invaded, they took over the idol and thus it was given a latin name: "eastre", the goddess of youth and beauty. it's interesting to note here that the idol that Paul had to deal with at Ephesus, artismis, more commonly known by its latin name diana, was actually the greek version of ishtar, and it become for them the goddess of fertility and agriculture, again linking her and her day back to the agricultural origins.
the early church did not celebrate easter as we know it, for they know full well what is the day that they should remember. Jesus' work on earth can be, if i may, divided into 5 main parts: birth, ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension. a thorough study of the 4 gospel books will show that Jesus did not want us to be doing anything to remember all these works, except His death. referring to specifically Luke 22:19-20 and the verses around it to keep it in context, we see that Jesus in instituting the Last Supper has His own clear purpose: to start the New Covenent ("This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you."), and that this rite is meant for us to remember His death by ("...do this in remembrance of me." ). and so we see that there is no mention of easter at all.
it was only during 300+AD that constantine decreed the celebration of easter, being consistent with his nature of trying to enforce Christianity into his empire, and using days of pagan religions conveniently for his own purposes. thus we also have him to thank for having Christmas on 25th dec, which happened to be the day of the sun god during his time, and what better way to stop the old religious observations by making everybody else celebrate Christmas on that day instead?
today's culture of having the easter rabbit and the easter egg... my own thoughts previously was that this might be a trick of satan to use excessive commercialization to try and cover up the original Christian message of Christ's resurrection that the day is supposed to remind the world of, just like how santa claus and exchanging presents obscure the real meaning of Christmas, to proclaim Christ's incarnation into our world to do all that He has done for us. but mushi's comment on the rabbit that lays eggs as being monstrous... i didnt know if he was joking or not haha!
but such an understanding has implications of our activities in church. like the same way we dont really advocate giving presents on christmas or angpows on CNY, to respect the fact that different people have different economic ability, it's not good to perpetuate secular, worldly practices like painting of eggs for the sunday school kids during easter period.
and for a reformed church who wants to cling onto the bible, it would be seen that days that are not mentioned in the bible dont have to be encouraged in church, like palm sunday, maundy thursday, pentecostal day, or even days like CNY service, national day service.
and so the two days that our church commemorate would be strictly Good Friday and Christmas. note that i did not use the word "celebrate", for that is not what God would have wanted us to do. for obvious reasons we don't celebrate the day that Christ died for us, but at the same time we do not need to mourn or be extremely saddened, for we know for a fact that He has risen out of the dead after 3 days, and it is in His death, burial, and resurrection that i was baptised in, and thus my source of eternal hope.
this sharing of mine is not meant for criticising the practise of other churches (although it might seems a lot like the Saidean notion of speaking truth to power haha), but rather as a reminder to myself that the rallying cry of "sola scriptura" is not as easy as it seems sometimes, being in this world and all. feel free to disagree or challenge the points above, but i hope that such a sharing will at least challenge you to desire to make every thought captive, for the glory of Christ alone.
"May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen." Hebrews 13:20-21

trying something new today haha wonder if it'll be picked up.
5 blessings today:
1. meeting limmy and shaffy super randomly for lunch! i was supposed to be alone till 2, but God had other plans obviously haha. it was a good time of frank and honest sharing, so thanks be to God. =) don't worry shaffy! i can take it haha. and more importantly, i pray that my faith is something that indeed can stand up to questioning. not by my own mental strength or intellect or theological studies that i have, but by His grace alone. =)
2. studying at the deck with ruiz. not a lot of work done, but still more than i would have had at home la.
3. being able to meet almost everyone from my anntic group ytd and today! cant really say we did celebrate josh's birthday in the end la haha. but it was an exciting time today haha.
4. sunset prayer! being able to serve in my own small way. and giving me the idea for my addition of this post's second half. and i'm quite bemused at how "has jerry drank his coffee today?" has sort of like become a game that people play with themselves... joanna can usually get it right, and today before sunset at the benches eeli said yes and grace said no... well, i had Coke... which is not coffee per se, but has caffeine... so... go figure.
5. typing this at engin canteen now! (okay la joce, SDE canteen can. haha.) being able to have darren here to be mugging with me. and so he says that he is better than limmy, who has to go back to her room and thus cant mug with me. HAHA.
+1=6. having "entertaining bus partner(s)" (Chia, 2009) to go home with =D
+1=7. ruiz's devotional sms-es. =)
5 things to be praying for today:
1. darren's op tml morning.
2. outreach events by churches this good friday weekend.
3. outreach in Romania!
4. everyone who's feeling overwhelmed with school work. (yes joy, you and your essay's here!)
5. exco nominations.
+1=6. graduates, where they're going, future. added this after seeing eugene chew's blog.
