Dear Jerry:
The basic topic of the research essay is fine—the suggestion that the multiple narratives of First Loves rewrite the Singapore story.
Unfortunately, the essay gets quickly sidetracked. You don’t have a clear thesis, and while you quite copiously from secondary sources you don’t really establish a voice of your own. The brief paragraphs of the essay don’t give space for in depth analysis of the text, and the essay ultimately seems to be a patchwork of other critical sources.
In future research essays, remember that you need to take time to develop and structure your ideas. Establish your own thesis, and illustrate it by close textual analysis of key features of the text. By all means use secondary sources but dialogue with them—don’t simply substitute what they say for your own analysis.
I’ve appreciated your enthusiasm in class, and am genuinely sorry that you couldn’t translate it into good quality work. Given the quality of effort from many of your classmates, however, I have to grade you down here.
